Riga, Latvia

Baltic state Latvia, which entered the Eurozone on January 1, is currently one of Europe’s hottest tourist destinations. National capital Riga has been designated by the European Union as one of two 2014 European Capitals of Culture, with festivities kicking off on January 17; the city’s architecture, music and art will be celebrated in hundreds of special events throughout the year.

Riga was founded in 1201. With its distinctive Art Nouveau architecture and medieval influence, the oldest part of the city has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Central Market, housedin five old zeppelin hangars, is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
