Lake District, Chile

Located south of capital Santiago, the Chilean Lake District stretches around 600 miles from Conception in the north to the island of Chiloe and Chilean Patagonia in the south. The region is a spectacularly beautiful land of alpine lake, snow-capped volcano, serpentine fjord and pristine larch forest, which makes it the perfect place to indulge in adventure tourism.

Likened by many to Switzerland, the Lake District has received many immigrants from Germany (in 1848 7,000 German immigrants arrived here as part of a campaign by the Chilean government to diminish the influence of the Mapuche Indians). As a result there is a strong German feel to the architecture and cuisine, not to mention place names and surnames.
