In 1999 French film director Eric Valli’s Oscar-nominated film, Himalaya, brought the rugged beauty of Nepal’s remote Dolpa region and its perilous salt trade with Tibet to global attention. Over a decade later – with cross-border trade all but disappeared – intrepid hikers are reviving the flagging fortunes of the region and its hardy inhabitants by following in the footsteps of yesteryear’s yak caravans.
