With fewer than 50 Marsican brown bears roaming the Abruzzo National Park in the central Apennine Mountains, time is running out for this unique subspecies. A range of new measures – including mobile electric fences, collaboration with local residents and hunters, efforts to boost sustainable tourism and wildlife corridors – may be the last chance of saving Italy’s largest carnivore.
